6A- Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach
The school executive designs structures and processes which results in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
Beginning in January, Carroll Middle School held six future leader tours, which is an opportunity for rising 5th graders and their families to tour the school, as well as learn about how Carroll MS is unique compared to other middle schools, specifically in terms of its leadership and technology magnet theme and its competency based grading system. The attached artifact serves as proof that I served as a tour guide for these events. Being a tour guide gave me an opportunity to market the school to community members, which is a major role of a school leader.
Throughout my residency, I attended PTA meetings and took on a few tasks within this organization. One task that I took on was creating a flyer for the school's biggest fundraiser of the school year called the No Fuss Fundraiser. Another task that I had was creating a partnership with the Triangle Rock Club, as a place that we could hold additional fundraisers at. I communicated through email back and forth with a representative from Triangle Rock Club. I also had a face-to-face meeting with the representative and a Carroll parent in regards to setting up the partnership. The school ended up having two successful events this year for Carroll families and staff members, in which 75% pf the proceeds went back to the school. Through fundraising that PTA is able to financially support so many programs that support Carroll Middle School's vision. such as: cultural arts programs, campus beautification, mini grants for teachers, student leadership showcases, and the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Program. In order to unite the parent and community around a school's vision, it is critical that school administrators serve as members of the PTA organization. Having a strong PTA can create financial stability for the school, generate additional volunteers, and increase parent and community partnerships.
As part of my coursework, I worked with a group of fellows to creating a short branding video for the principal preparation program. The goal of the video was to develop key messaging and communication for internal staff and grant institutions, as well as external publics about the impact of the program from the perspective of the participants. In a county where there are so many schooling options within the public, charter, and private sectors; branding is a key responsibility as the school leader. Creating a branding video can be a convenient and visual way of communicating your school's vision both in person and on the web in order to recruit families, community members, and staff members.
6B- Federal, State, and District Mandates
The school executive designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state, and district mandates.
One of the training that I attended during my residency was CPI training. During this training, I was taught how to communicate with students and in extreme circumstances how to intervene using physical intervention. The most important thing that I remember from this training is the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security phrase. As a school leader when intervening with student behaviors it is important that I look at all situations through the students' eyes, that I foster relationships based on trust and understanding, that I maintain an environment that is physically and emotionally safe, and that I will honor the student's best interest.
Another thing that I was tasked with during my residency was serving as the Bloodborne Pathogen Site Coordinator. This meant that I was responsible for making sure that all staff members completed and verified that they completed the bloodborne pathogen and diabetes training at the beginning of the school year. I also had to make sure that staff members working in positions in which they were likely to be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (coaches, safety techs, regional programs teachers and assistants, office staff, custodians, administrators, etc) took the Appendix A Health Training. Additionally, I was in charge of making sure that staff members were using the proper protective equipment and techniques when performing tasks involved with blood and bodily fluids. Implementing the safety measures that are listed on the attached self-audit that I completed are required by the district and approved by the Wake County Public School System Health and Human Services office.
Another task that I had during my principal residency was coordinating all of the school field trip for the year. This involved communicating the expectations around field trips to all staff members, distributing and collecting the paperwork that teachers sponsoring field trips need to fill-out, and creating a field trip plan that was sent to the area superintendent for approval. Mandates that are required when planning a field trip include: making sure students are not denied participation based on the ability to pay or not, making sure each student's parent or guardian fills out a permission slip at least 30 days prior to the first field trip in order for the school nurse to review each slip, and making sure each school trip has a School Safety and Medical Plan in place. The attached artifact is a letter that was sent to all staff outlining the expectations for field trips, along with links to the required paperwork for field trips.
As part of my course work, I wrote a case brief for the Morse vs. Frederick case. In this brief, I summarized the nature of the case, the procedural summary, the facts of the case, the holding and decision, discussion questions regarding the issues of the case, and commentary. The case I wrote the brief on involved a students holding a banner at a school sponsored event that involved a slang reference to drugs. When commenting on this case, I had the opportunity to really reflect on how I would handle this situation as a school leader because students should have the right to express themselves freely. However, students should not be able to express themselves in a way that is harmful to other students, such as promoting the use of drugs, which would mean that it would be my job to hold them accountable per what board policy is.
